As human beings, we will inevitably go through a life-changing event at some point in our life. It could be losing a job of 20 years, finalizing a divorce, being forced to retire early because of an injury, or leaving the military. These life-changing events can have disastrous effects on us and the people around us. Some of us never work through these events and end up unhappy and stuck in life. This happened to Nick when he left a 12-year career as a Marine Raider with the Marine Corps Special Operations Unit. For years, he was stuck with feelings of anger, indifference, and bitterness. Until he finally decided to take action and apply the skills he learned as a Raider and got to work on solving his personal problems. The Excommunicated Warrior takes you through the journey of Nick’s transition out of the Special Operations as he attempted to reintegrate into the civilian world. Through this journey, he identified 7 different stages of transition. Nick quickly realized that these 7 stages were something most veterans had to go through and he launched a non-profit that focused on helping the nation's veterans transition out of the military. Soon, Nick started developing steps to work through the stages, all aimed at the military community. However, through various speaking engagements, it became clear that Nick's ideas about the 7 stages of transition applied to anyone, not just veterans. The stages applied to anyone that had gone through a life-altering event. This book outlines the 7 stages and how you can use them in your life. In short, the book is for anyone who has gone through a life-changing event and refuses to be a victim of circumstance. Anyone who decides to never quit, never surrender, and always move forward.

Excommunicated Warrior The 7 Stages Of Transtion Nick A Koumalatsos Books Reviews

  • This is a tremendous accomplishment and feat of self-help reading for this decade. As we head toward the final year before 2020, we face so many problems as Americans. Especially besotted by that pain are our GWOT veterans. Nick gives a no-nonsense advisory tale in his unique prose that is not only raw and real, but incredibly relatable.

That isn’t to say that this work is only consumable by and for veterans, not even close. He gives specific examples of the adversities he had to overcome and they are indeed, very HUMAN problems.

I can honestly recommend this book to anyone who is struggling with any kind of transition. Be it career, life, body, marital status... any difficult transition you are experiencing can probably find helpful wisdom in these pages.

In the interest of full disclosure, I am not a veteran. I’m just a middle aged woman that enjoys a great read. This book definitely ticked that box. More than anything, I truly respect and admire the courage and perseverance it took to be so honest and vulnerable with the world watching. Well done, Nick. You’ve written what I’m sure, many will consider, a life-changing book.
  • Our boy Nick has paid some dues and he has watched his buddy's take some hit's, inside and outside of the business of war fighting. I'll forgive him for being a Devil Dog and a Raider because the soldier experience is universal and Nick takes it head on in his book, Excommunicated Warrior. If you train hard and carry a weapon in a theater of war and you face a berserk enemy; you are in a priesthood of sorts. But in a true ecclesiastical enclave you never leave. We volunteers to the U.S. fighting force do. We move on from the cloisters of war and hard training and brutal death to what we hope is something beyond, a rebirth from a warriors privations to a civilians freedom. It turns out that that is not so easy...and it too can get pretty ugly. In simple and straightforward prose Nick demonstrates that this too is universal to the soldier experience and that the challenges of surviving a soldiers life can and do prepare us for thriving in a civilian life. As you progress through this slim volume you will find it relatable and timely. I put it down a time or two when his truth got too close to my own and when I just needed to think a bit on his perspective. I often went back just to read a sentence or two that I found important. I bought the book because I had hoped to benefit from it. To learn from Nick's experience and desire now to share what he believes. I have over 38 years of military service as a Grunt and the high mileage and dysfunction to back it up! I read the book. I will read it again. And I personally and those whom I care for will benefit from it. Thanks Nick. And perhaps I should extend this thanks to Miss Capra too... A warrior and a strong woman are a hell of a team. Best of luck in all, you don't need it, you have learned how to make your own luck!
  • As someone who is seeing the light at the end of the tunnel and close to the end of military service, this book was absolutely helpful. Many transition programs focus on resume writing, certification programs, how to dress for a job interview, but not very many deal with the psychological and emotional turmoil that comes from leaving a tribe. At times the distance and pain can lead down destructive paths. In this book, Nick Koumalatsos takes us on an amazing journey through a major transition, through the 7 stages, to a life of victory. He is raw with his emotions and his vulnerability opens the door to authenticity. Veterans face overwhelming apprehension as they pass from the warmth and safety of the pack to the cold and lonely world outside of it. In this book, we see how to navigate through it, a preparation guide, a Decision Making Process, that will help anyone see what’s to come, or if you’ve already gone through it, will aid in understanding what happened. Once I started reading, I couldn’t stop. It’s the first book I’ve read from start to finish in awhile. I recommend this book to everyone.

  • I usually try and stay away from too many reviews and this one will be very short. Nearing the end of what seems like a very long injury journey for me I finally picked up a copy of this book. I have been voraciously reading books during my down time. This one started out no different. I was into it from the start and realized I was on chapter four. I stopped and decided to go back and use this book as a daily meditation starting with Stage 1. There are really seven stages and three steps in this book. So, for me eight days of concentrating on one thing was a huge step. I don't want to give away the entire contents of the book so I will stop there. If you are in any kind of a transition or major change in your life this book will help you. It doesn't matter if you are military, ex military or someone in the daily grind of life and making changes this book will make sense. Hope it helps someone else.
