When the Game Stands Tall Special Movie Edition The Story of the De La Salle Spartans and Football Longest Winning Streak Neil Hayes John Madden Books Reviews

  • A uniquely remarkable story of commitment, endurance, fellowship with a perfect strategy for excellence led by a modest genius and his inspired staff. We readers are fortunate to get the inside-scoop relayed by this excellent and experienced author who was actually "embedded" within the team during the streak.
This is much more than a compelling sports story of young men and their mentor being the best they can be for their teammates. It is a story of honesty, friendship, love and loyalty being triumphant! All leaders of men should learn this.
The formula for success evolved and perpetuated year after year, as players graduated and rookies replacing them gathering experience and contributing industriously in practice, fitness drills and hard fought games.. Their opponents were frequently larger and heavier but none were ever stronger or fitter pound-for-pound.
  • I loved this book. While it is admittedly about football, that is not the message. The message of this book is that Couch Lad and the De La Salle coaches used football as a way of teaching boys how to be great men. Year after year.

The book is very detailed, well written, and engaging. Once I started, I could not put it down. I read it over a week, cover to cover.
  • I loved this book. I agree with the reviewer who said it was about using football to teach boys to be great men. If I'd read it a few years earlier I probably would have tried to persuade my son to go to DeLaSalle, despite the fact that I think football is too dangerous a sport.
  • We read this book for our "spiritual" book club. It was very well written and although it had a lot of football detail which kind of went over my head, I enjoyed reading about the young players and their coaches. The spiritual message is subtle but impactful, more of a "do the right thing" message.
  • Great Book - covering more than the movie.
  • So Well written. Coach Lad was so inspirational to his kids. A joy to read about. More high school and college coaches should emulate him. Winning is not everything, it's the way the game is played that counts.
  • Great movie with wonderful life lessons!
  • okay. went and saw movie afterward....book much better.
